Introduction

I keep seeing people asking how to do keyword research so I have decided to do a quick over-view on how I do my own keyword research.

There are many ways to do keyword research, but its all about what you find works for you, and all method works to a degree so don't be too worried.

METHOD STEP BY STEP

1) Go to Google and type in your main keyword.



2) Press on your keyword and a new window should open with google and your keyword typed in it. Put your keywords in quotes and press enter, you should now see a figure, this number is showing you how many people are you competitors.



3/4) Put &start=990 to see how many pages google is showing with your keyword.






5) Insert intitle:"keyword" and press search to see how many of the competition have done on page SEO and have the keyword in the title on their page. (part of on page SEO).



6) Insert inurl:"keyword" and press search to see how many of the competition have put the keyword in the URL. (this is part of on page SEO and helps alot for ranking)



7) Insert inurl:"keyword" inurl"keyword" and press search and you will see how many people have done proper SEOand are REAL competitors for your keyword.



8) Lastly you want to go and see the PR and Age and links to see how tough the competition is for the real competition (on FIRST PAGE).

ALMOST DONE NOW....... ONLY 1 STEP LEFT......... GO AND TAKE ACTION AND FIND KEYWORDS UNTIL IT BECOMES 2ND NATURE TO YOU.

Default Calculating the competition for a Keyword - Tutorial

Hi guys,

Many IMers make mistakes by misjudging the competition for a keyword. This tutorial may help you to determine the competition correctly.

First of all, "the bar" in adwords keywords tool is got nothing to do with serp competition. Its competition for ads. I see even some advanced SEOers make this mistake.

See the images below.






The first image contains "nearly impossible" ultra high competitive keywords. Look at the competition bar. Nearly empty.

It doesnt mean that they have low competion in SERP. It means if you want to give search ads for those terms "the competition is low". You can get clicks by spending just $0.05 or something. ITS LOW COMPETITION FOR ADS. NOT SERP.

Now look at the second image. These keywords "easy" to rank. But the competition bar is nearly full. It means, so many people are giving adds for these keywords, so you have to pay like $100 per click in adwords.

Now we understand that google adwords competition got nothing to do with our keywords, we can move on to the next step.



1. Look for EMD in top 10. If you find .com in it, it bit tough to out rank. You better have .org, .net on that keyword or at least that keyword is "in" your domain.

2. If you find more than one EMD (with other domain extensions), you loos one point again.

3. If you see more than 5 domains having the keyword in it, again you loose a point.

4. Now check the title tags, if you see top 5 sites having "exact" keyword in title, you loose a point again. If the keywords are split or unordered in title tags, thats fine.

5. Now check allintitle:keyword. Look at the number of results. Less than 50k is better.

6. Check inurl:keyword . less than 50k results is good.

You dont have to worry about last two points much if you have no problem in first 4 points.

Lets define a "perfect" keyword.

-> you have .com or .org or country level emd (if target a specif country)
-> Top 10 results have no emds.
-> No exact keyword in title tags

Last point is pretty much impossible for a decent keyword. So, just take first two points.

Post Clearing up some things about PR and SERP ranking.



It's been said over and over and over again that the PR of your own site doesn't affect it's position in the SERPs, and yet I still come across people talking about how important PR is for your site.

Since this topic still seems to be so misunderstood, let me give a short explanation of why the PR of your page doesn't matter for ranking in the SERP.

The only reason PR matters for your own site is if you're going to sell advertising space on your site or you plan to sell your site. Those are the only reasons you need to be concerned with the PR of your own pages.


For ranking in the SERPs, the PR of your own page doesn't matter, but the PR of pages you get backlinks from does.
Here's why:
PR is based on the total backlinks a page is getting, but the SERP position is based on how well your site ranks for a particular keyword.

So lets say your website "somedomain.com" has the following backlinks to it:
10,000 for "keyword 1"
10,000 for "keyword 2"
10,000 for "keyword 3"
10,000 for "keyword 4"
10,000 for "keyword 5"

Now the PR will be based on the total 50,000 backlinks, but it's position in the serp for any particular keyword will still be only 10,000 backlinks.

If you create another 50,000 backlinks for "keyword 6" then there will be a postive effect on the PR of the site, which now has a total 100,000 backlinks. But it won't affect it's position in the SERP for keywords 1 thru 5, (although "keyword 6" will now be ranking based on the new 50,000 links).

So that's why the PR of your own site doesn't matter as far as ranking in the SERPs.


But what about the PR of sites you get backlinks from?

Well, higher PR sites carry a little more weight than low PR sites. Lets say that for "keyword 1" you focused on high PR sites to get those backlinks. Now (depending on how many and how high the PR) those 10,000 backlinks on high PR sites will count the same as if you had gotten 30,000 backlinks on low PR sites. So by getting a lot of high PR sites backlinking for "keyword 1", your sites position in the SERP will be improved for that keyword.

To sum it up in short:
A page's PR is based on the total amount and quality of all it's backlinks.
A page's SERP position is based only on the backlinks targeting a keyword.




(Of course there are other factors affecting your sites position as well, but this explanation is only regarding PR and backlinks.)

Basic SEO practices for newbies:



I've been recieving a few PMs lately along the lines of this one.

Hey Greywolf over the last couple of days you've answered some questions I had about SEO with great ease. I was wondering if you do any kind of SEOconsulting with people trying to become familiar with SEO??

The answer is "not really". I'm not even close to being some kind of SEO guru, the questions I've been answering lately are all just pretty basic.

There are a lot of people better at SEO than me, so if you want a consultant you should try checking in the BST services threads. In fact I purchase services from the BST threads myself. If you do your due diligence before choosing a service provider, I've found that the sellers here on bhw are some of the best anywhere.

So, rather than keep answering individual PMs, I'll just make this thread and send them here from now on.

Basic SEO practices for newbies:

The thing to remember is that SEO isn't a magic bullet. It's important, but no one knows the exact algorithms the SEs use, and each one is different so all you can do is optimize the best you can. There happens to be a few things that you should just always do whenever you make a new website. Don't stress over every little thing, just make sure you are doing it, this should just become kind of automatic for you.

Make sure you fill in your meta tags with a good title, description, and the right keywords. I personally don't think the keywords meta-tag is nearly as important as everyone else on here does, but it gives me a way to organize my keywords list for me to reference. When you start having many different websites, it's good to include whatever notes to yourself you can. When you come back to work on an older site you might not remember eveything you were thinking before. The metatags help you remember your site info as much as it helps the SE figure it out. A good rule of thumb is that anything that won't hurt you forSEO and might help, you should use and use correctly. Definately use the title meta-tag, try to include keywords in the title. Definately use the description meta-tag, google will normally use this for the summary it displays in the listing. It isn't used for indexing so write it for humans, this is what gets people to click on your link when they see it in the SERP. Don't use the same metatags for every page on your site. Take the time to make them be specific to each page.

Create good content. Make sure you have some decent content. Content is what the internet was invented for. If you have unique and quality content, then all the seo and backlinking you're doing is just to get the ball rolling. Give them what they want, show them where it is, and they'll start coming. If it's good enough then it'll eventually start building on its own naturally because people like what they found. That's the idea anyway. So whenever possible use the best page design and the best content possible. Avoid duplicate content between different pages on your site, the SE will most likely penalize your site for that.

Remember, your content isn't just something to get google to like your site, it is the whole point of your site. The content and how you structure it is what will make visitors do what you want when they get there. If it's crap they'll just leave, and 99% of them won't leave by clicking on your adsense or affilliate link, they'll just close the window or use the back button. (yes, of course if your doing blackhat stuff you can make the browser go where you want, but that's for a different discussion.)

Include your keywords. Structure your content correctly, make a few title headers in the content that include keywords (use header tags h1, h2, etc.), try to have a keyword density around 2% in your content, and maybe 4% for the whole page including the metatags, alt tags, anchors, etc.

Be sure that your .htaccess is set up correctly. Decide on which way you want your url to be and stick with it. If you decide to use www then always use it like that in your links, don't use both. I usually set up a 301 for all www requests to redirect to non-www urls. If you don't set that up then every single page on your site can appear to google as having at least one duplicate. If that's the only thing wrong on your site it isn't going to kill you, but it's so easy to fix. If you don't know how to set up a redirect in your .htaccess file then just do a search, there are many other threads explaining it. Check google if you can't find it here. Also, .htaccess only apples if your on an Apache server, Windows servers do it a little differently, if that applies to you then just search google to find out how to do it. If your consitent in your linking, then the only time the redirect will come into play is if you get natural backlinks that you have no control over. You should also specify which you prefer, www or not-www in google tools if you use it. (If you don't then you really should, I recommend you set yourself up an account for webmaster tools and analytics.)

Make a robots.txt file and I like to include a favicon because without them the robots will trigger file not found errors on your server. Be sure to configure your robots.txt correctly. Make a custom 404 page. If your site has more than just a couple of pages then also create a sitemap.xml file. It's not a bad idea to just create a sitemap anyway no matter what, it lets you define the structure of your site to the crawlers. Just search google if you don't know how to do any of that, it's very basic and you can find exact instructions within a minute when you do a search.

Other than that there isn't a lot more you can do for on-site SEO. When people ask about SEO they're always thinking of on-siteSEO, but thats the easy and quick part. Just do it and get on with it.

Everything else is off-site SEO and involves building backlinks and promotion.
This is where you need to focus your efforts. This is where the magic bullet is, if there really is one.

Social Bookmarks, Directory Submissions, Profile Links, and Blog Comments are really the easiest place to start getting backlinks. It's not a bad idea to purchase these links from a service. They are easy to make, but to do it right they really need to be posted from many different accounts and ip adresses. A good idea when your starting is to do it yourself a little bit to see how it works, then purchase larger quantities from a service. You want to get a lot of links, but you don't want to over do it. Building to fast can look unnatural, just do some searches and read up on it a little more. How many and how fast is a judgement call you have to make. hold off on more complex linkbuilding until you have a little more experience. Linkwheels and other link structures can be very powerful, but can also hurt your site a lot if not done correctly.

Whenever possible include keyword anchors and title or alt tags on your backlinks. Don't always use the same anchors, vary it up a little, use 3 or 4 different keywords and even do a few with some non keyword anchors. You are trying to look as though a lot of different real people have taken a liking to your site, if it were natural then all links wouldn't be exactly the same, so you want to simulate that same type of randomness. Backlinking strategies are all about simulating the natural events that happen as a site grows in popularity. If you can do it successfully then the SE's will give you good position in the listings, and then hopefully what you are simulating can become reality. The point of all of it is to get traffic.

Change up your anchor text. The idea of backlinking is to simulate that masses of people are becoming interested in your site. It should have some amount of randomness to it in order to look natural. I've seen a few made up stats on what's best, but I think a good rule of thumb is maybe about 45% primary keywords, 35% secondary keywords, and about 15% random unrelated like Click Here, and then about 5% just the url. The exact percentage isn't dramatically important, it just needs to seem like the linking is natural.

Create relevant articles containing your keywords, include backlinks using keyword anchors, and submit to article directories. Article directories are mostly authority sites and your article becomes a relevant backlink to your site. Then create profiles and accounts on blogs, social networking sites, forums etc. Include a link to your website whenever you do that and each one of those become backlinks as well.

Thats the end of it. Well kinda.
Go back and watch your stats to see what keywords are getting the most traffic to your site, analyze the data a little bit and if you need to, remove or add keywords to your content and tags, and adjust the anchors your using in your backlinks.

Continue building links. Remember you're trying to artificially create the appearance to the SE that your site is popular. When that happens naturally, people are always adding new links to your site. Since you are trying to look natural you have to do the same thing. Linkbuilding never stops completely.

OK, there you go. That's that basics of SEO. Everything else is about fine tuning, and has to be looked at for each individual situation.

The Complete Guide to Starting a Website



Since there was a large increase of members to BHW, and there are members who are brand new to the online business, so I decided to spend a little of my time and write a small simple guide on how to start a blog, which is the best for brand new members when they think they are ready. This is a simple guide, so I won’t go into very much details (ie method how to make $100/day with Adsense).
I am not associated nor affiliate with any of the sites mentioned in this thread.

Registering a Domain
Your domain plays a very important role in SEO. SEO is Search Engine Optimization. When registering a domain, there are few stuff you have to consider.
-The shorter the domain, the better.
-Your domain must contain your main keyword(s).
-I highly recommend a .com or a .net because of SEO.
-Make the domain easy to remember.

A domain like howtomakemoneyonline.com is way too long, even though it is right to the point, onlinemoney.com is a much better domain, or .net if the .com isn’t available.

If you are going to make a site and you want to rank your domain for certain countries, like if you are going to make a site specifically for UK, then you would consider getting a UK domain extension (.co.uk) , and if you are Indian and will be writing in Indian language, then an Indian domain extension (.in) would work the best. This means if your domain extension is .co.uk, then you would be targeting Google.co.uk , since you want people from UK to come to you, and you would rank for Google.co.uk.
If your site is going for worldwide, then .com or .net is the best. But of course if you cannot afford $9-$10 then you would either have to wait for a $1 .com coupon from Godaddy, or you would have to buy a .info (which is from $0.9-$2.5, depending on the registrars). If you have $0, I would recommend you to go with http://Blogger.com since it’s owned by Google.com, and is extremely easy to setup, and Google will help it rank (but not alone of course).

Searching for a Web-Host
Web hosting is simply where you host your website, in better words, where you keep the site’s files. This is needed for a site.
Don’t get frightened because I said files, you don’t have to have any skills to make a site, you don’t have to know how to code or design. 99% of the hosts have Fantastico, it is a tool which is you will get when you buy a host. Fantastico makes life simpler, There are many programs which you can install with 1 click using Fantastico, you will just have to enter the basic details (site title, description, email, username, password etc).
Well I recommend you to install Wordpress (under “Blogs” in Fantastico). Wordpress has extremely good plugins, and they are very easy to install, and surely will help in SEO and other stuff (depending on what plugins you use).
And another reason to use Wordpress is because Wordpress has lots and lots of themes, any kind of theme you can think of, even company themes.

Some themes don’t allow you to add a logo, you can just enter the site title and it will be shown as text, but some themes require you to add a logo, but no worries, there are plenty of free tools to make logos (online tools), and you can make your own if you are good at photoshop, or if you can afford, then just hire a designer from BHW, and again, there are plenty of good designers here.

Content
When it comes to content, there is a very popular quote, “Content is King”.
Google, and any other search engine site LOVES unique content, by unique I am saying that it cannot be found anywhere else, you can write unique content, if you can’t, then you can use a content spinner (there are many free ones, but you will have to do small changes to it since none are perfect).

It is extremely easy to add articles on your Wordpress blog, I am sure you already know by now.
You may ask, how many words per article does Google love the most, people say different stuff, but I prefer 300-500 word articles.
If you can afford to hire an article writer, then sure go ahead, an article writer charges about 1 cent per word, and there are plenty of good writers here on BHW, go to the Buy/Sell Service section and you should find plenty.
But if you cannot afford, and you are not good at all in writing articles, then you can use non-unique content, just copying from another site related to your niche, and then pasting it on your site.
There is a plugin for Wordpress called wp-o-matic , it’s really simple to use, it will take content from the sites you want, but sometimes you will have small issues, so you may need to add the article(s) yourself.


SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Every search engine loves certain backlinks, Google will love backlink type A more than backlink type B, but Yahoo will love Backlink type B more than backlink type A, but all search engines have something in common, they all like backlinks, but just some are more powerful than others. So any backlink you can get is worth it.
There are many tools that can get you backlinks, and they do save time.
Before building any backlinks, you need to know your keyword, which will be your anchor text. The keyword must be located in the title/domain.

Anchor text is basically text/keyword that is clickable, like example when you go to Google.com , on the top you will see “Images” “News” etc, those are anchor texts, clickable words/text, which will direct you to another page.
Here are ways to get backlinks.

Blog Commenting – Blog Commenting on High Page Rank (PR) blogs are very powerful, I used to do them a lot before and the results were impressing. You can find high pr blogs easily, just google “how to find high pr blogs” and there are tons of ways, you can also hire someone to use scrapebox for you to find high pr blogs.
There are also high pr blog posts, meaning the post itself has a high pr, that is more powerful, but you might notice there are many spammy comments, but still it will take you few seconds to get a backlink.

There is a tool called “Scrapebox” that scrapes blog posts, on any niche (you decide the keywords etc) and it will scrape it for you, and you fill in the details (ie anchor text, url etc) and it will comment on all of them, but watch out about akismet, but I prefer manual blog commenting.

Forum Profiles – Well you know what’s a forum I suppose? You are on a forum right now. Simply find many high PR forums, register on them, and in your signature just enter your anchor text. Most of the times or forums it is this format (without space between U and R at the start)

There is a tool called XRumer, it is an extremely powerful tool, but if your site is new, you should not use it, it creates thousands and thousands of forum profiles and puts your anchor in signature, but it is expensive.

Link Exchange – This works best if your site has a page rank, then you just request link exchange on DP or WF with the same niche, and most likely with the same PR. He will put your anchor text on his/her site, and you put his/her at your site.

Web Directories - There are tens of thousands of web-directories for you to submit your website to, and they will approve it. They also have featured listing but don’t mind that, just go for the free listing which 99% of the directories offer, these aren’t as strong as high PR backlinks, but they are still worth it, as I said, every backlink is worth it.

Press Release – This is usually done when a new site is launched, or you are launching something on your site, or there is an event etc, then you simply write a press release (google “how to write a press release”) , and then you will submit it to many press release sites, it will take few days to approve your press release.

Buying Links - You can pay other website owners to put your anchor on their site, the prices vary depending on the page rank of their site, and of course target websites on the same niche as you.

Guest Blogging - This one is one of my favorite. It is simply offering other blog owners as the same niche of your site, offering them a free article with 2-3 anchor texts in your article, this is indeed really worth it.

Buying Blog Posts – You can also buy blog posts, sometimes they will write an article for you and publish it on their blog, and sometimes you will have to write an article and they will publish it on their site, and again, prices vary on the page rank of the site.

Article Directories – Writing unique articles yourself or hiring an article writer, and then submitting it to high PR article directories, it will take few days to approve.

Yahoo Answers – You can also hire people for this as well, but a bit hard to find. Answers.Yahoo.com , register an account and go to the category on your niche, and answer people’s questions, but first 25 answers, don’t put anything in the “source” box, and then afterwards, for most of the answers put your website link in the “source” box, but make sure your answer actually answers the person’s question, it might get chosen as best answer, and Yahoo Answers ranks well for questions, and your answer will be shown first if it was chosen as Best Answer by the questioner.

Social Media – Social Media like Twitter, Facebook, Digg, etc, submit your websites there. There are many social media sites like digg, and you will have to create an account on all of them, and then submit your website.

Web 2.0 Profiles – Creating profiles on Web 2.0 sites is very powerful indeed, like Squidoo and then writing an article and linking back to your site, and also Blogger (Free blog, yes!) and writing an article linking back to your site, and video sites like Youtube, Metacafe etc.

Monetization
Monetizing your website so you can make money. Here are few ways you can make money from your website.

Google Adsense – Google Adsense , to register an account your site must be at least 6 months old, they will give you a code and you will put it on your site, and a banner will show up, or text link (you decide), and then if a visitor goes to your site and clicks on it, you will get money, how much, it depends on the niche and keywords.
There are other networks like Google Adsense, but Google Adsense is the best.

Content Lockers – In order for a person to access a page on your website (this works only if the page has something useful for the visitor), you simply put a content locker , and the person will have to do a survey in order to access the page. There are sites that offer that, you can google “CPA Sites” and you will get a list.

Selling Banner Space – If your site gets lots of visitors, you can sell banner space on your website.

Selling Text Links – Selling text links on your Page Rank blog (works best if your blog has a page rank! Else you don’t have to do this). The price you will offer for links on your site depends on the page rank your website is.

Affiliate Marketing – Clickbank is a website where you can find many stuff to sell, and you will get a percentage for each sale. Usually each affiliate offer you will get banners to advertise it with, with different sizes so you can put it on your site.

Donations – This barely works now, it will only work if your site really really had useful information so the person will donate to your paypal.

Google.com/analytics is the best tool which is free to track how many visitors your site gets, from where, and from which keyword from search engines, it is the best, and most website owners use it. There is a plugin called “Google Analyticor” for Wordpress which will allow you to put the Google Analytics code very easily, I really do recommend it (I already listed it in the plugin list above).

Before we begin, let me introduce myself.. I've been working in this industry since 2007 and currently run an SEO company based in London, UK, specializing in corporate SEO.

Unfortunately, while working in this industry, I have come across some online marketing companies that infuriate me; from their phone manner, to their lack of dedication to client results. It really puzzles me how some firms manage to stay in business. Having said that, there are some really fantastic companies out there that really do impress me, and even have the capabilities to make one a tad jealous from time to time! If I can direct your course away from the pathetic, money guzzling time wasters and towards the companies that will provide you with fantastic results, this thread will have served its purpose!

Before we discuss how to buy SEO, we must first agree on what exactly SEO is! So without further ado..

1. What is SEO.. really?

Since the late 90s people have battled out this question on forums, in dingy bars, in the back of New York taxis and in bustling Mumbai restaurants.. To put it bluntly, SEO is the course of action that results in improving the rankings of a website in a given search engine (mostly Google) - First you find the 'keywords' that when searched for should make your website appear. Keywords are chosen based on the type of traffic you want to drive and users you want to target.. then when you're good and ready you get started with the SEO procedure itself..

But this 'procedure', and the 'how to' has been the fuel for heated debates (and even fiery arguments) around the world for nearly two decades. And to be honest, no one is backing down.. Everyone believes they have the 'golden ticket' to success, and to make matters worse, certain techniques and tactics have worked for periods of time, before being 'shutdown' in the following months – however this doesn't stop a thousand people from swearing on Aladdin's underwear that a method still works..

So let's clear the fog, hose down the windows, and take a look at what criteria is really needed to gain those sought after search engine rankings!

Firstly, let's talk about 'on-page' SEO. This is something that the majority of people do agree on (for the most part!). This basically requires that your website contains the elements it needs for good rankings – think keywords correctly placed in pages with a favourable density, meta tags, meta descriptions and good linking structures and menus.. People will still argue these specifics 'till the cows come home, but in general the SEO community agrees somewhat that these factors are important and should be carried out in a fairly uniform way.

Okay, get the guns, artillery and Sherman tanks out.. we're about to talk 'off-page' SEO.. This is the real 'meat' of SEO where men will kill their own brothers for failing to concede that one type of link is better than another.. This is the dark magic that occurs outside the walls of your website and in the battlefield that is the world wide web.. or for a less dramatic description,'external elements'.

'Off-page' SEO is all about connections. When Google decides which websites to rank highly on its search engine for specific terms, it is generally agreed that it takes a look at the 'connections' and 'associations' that different websites have. That is to say, if you are trying to rank for the keyword 'best microphone' it would be beneficial to be linked to by other websites that discuss this topic, and for best results you'd want links that are from websites that only focus on this niche. Oh, and if you can get a link from the homepage of one of these sites, or even better if the anchor text mentions 'best microphones', then you're really in business (relatively speaking!).

But this is all very vague.. we could sit here for hours and debate the best anchor text variety, or the optimal link velocity, or how to correctly manage social signals.. but you don't care about this! And you shouldn't! Your job is to run your business, and the job of whoever you hire is to figure out these annoying, tedious questions (we love it really!)..

Hold on a minute though, for you to make the best decision, we need to look at the two distinct factions of SEO – WhiteHat and BlackHat..

2. BlackHat SEO and its purpose – the past, present & future.

After people figured out that SEO was based on connections from other websites (in the late 90s, when Google incorporated this into its algorithm) things got a bit out of hand.. In the early days, it was as easy as creating a few links from a few websites, and bob's your uncle, you had rankings. Then people realised, 'hey, wait a minute, maybe if I make more links, I'll get better rankings' – and this worked! Before you knew it people were creating thousands of links, using 'link farms' and other shady techniques to propel their sites to the top of the listings. This was the birth of 'BlackHat' SEO.

As Google grew smarter, it devised ways to root out these methods and the sites that were benefiting from them in what became a back and forth battle between online marketers and Google that is still raging today..

BlackHat techniques also grew stronger and more widespread as programmers started to develop software and 'tools' that would create thousands of links (often in just hours) that would shoot websites to the top of the rankings..

At the same time, WhiteHat SEO was also being employed across websites with other webmasters receiving fantastic results. While others would use software and build thousands of 'spammy' links. Those using WhiteHat SEO would only have to make a few connections to high quality related websites, to see the same results. As Google, knocked other sites off the listings left, right and centre, those using WhiteHat techniques didn't experience any penalization and continued benefiting from high rankings..

As Google got better and better at catching out the BlackHat spam techniques, the BlackHatters improved as well.

Fast-forward to the late noughties and BlackHat techniques were starting to mimic WhiteHat more and more.. turning into what some would start to call 'GreyHat' (but what is still, in essence, BlackHat). While a WhiteHat campaign would focus on building up quality links over time and making real, lasting connections, BlackHat/GreyHat would copy this procedure at twice the speed, making connections that at first glance seemed high quality, but when looked into with further scrutiny, would unravel, exposing the spam that lay beneath. In recent years, GreyHat has evolved, where in some cases it can be difficult to decipher between GreyHat and WhiteHat campaigns. Private Blog Networks, or PBNs have been at the forefront of this complication, as connections from websites within these networks can be extremely hard to tell apart from legitimate websites. The problem here is that entire networks would be discovered by Google who would then 'shutdown' the entire PBN(deindex all sites from their search engine). (The Checklist section at the bottom of this post should help you decipher between the WhiteHat and GreyHat firms out there!)

The BlackHat motto, past, present and future has always been the same, 'Cheap, fast results, that make money in the short term, but fade away fast'. This is why BlackHat marketing and methods will always have a place and there will always be demand for such services. A quick, spammy campaign is launched that holds together just long enough to grasp some quick rankings before the whole thing falls apart and you're back at square one (or worse). The aim here is to profit as much in this small window as possible, before the house made of straw comes tumbling down. Obviously these techniques have no place anywhere near your 'real' business! At the same time they have their function and shouldn't be 'poo pood' in general, horses for courses and all that..

3. Why you should demand WhiteHat SEO for 'real' businesses.

When you choose WhiteHat SEO for your business, you are choosing results that last, from a provider who cares about high quality marketing, and bringing the best results, not the fastest or cheapest. In most cases, those that perform WhiteHat SEO will be more reputable by nature. They are the organisations who will want to go the extra mile with your company for years to come and are passionate about delivering the highest quality SEO available. For the most part they aren't interested in quick results, quick sales and then never to speaking to you again. They want a lasting relationship that is beneficial for both parties over a long period. Real businesses last for a long time, they are not a flash in the pan operation, and their marketing shouldn't be either.

Beware 'GreyHat' firms who fly the WhiteHat flag and lead you to believe you're getting a high quality campaign. The'Checklist' part of this post will help you to avoid such organisations.

4. What does WhiteHat SEO entail?

We've been over most of the elements of a WhiteHat campaign, but let's recap:



High quality connections with other related and authoritative sites.

Steady, slower results.
Results that will last.
Results that won't harm your business in the long term.
Work is manually performed, without software.

All content used in campaigns is written by a skilled writer.
No auto-generation software is used for written content.



5. What price can you expect to pay?

WhiteHat SEO is expensive, let's not pretend it isn't.. But at the end of the day, you're hiring a digital marketing firm, capable of bringing highly targeted users to your website who will convert very well.. so to be blunt, it's worth the cost.

It's strange, sometimes people assume that because this type of marketing is 'digital', it's going to be cheaper, and isn't too important.. With major markets such as consumer electronics retailing nearly 50% of products online, 2015 is definitely the time to get serious about online marketing.. If you're looking at 30%-50% of your products being bought and sold online, your marketing campaigns should mimic this. Yet it still surprises me how little time, effort and money some companies are willing to put into this area of their business and how unwilling they can be to spend the extra bucks while they spend thousands in offline campaigns that often won't bring the same results.. If you're not looking to spend a decent budget on an online campaign, then simply don't bother.. It's better for your business to have no online campaign, than a cheap one that will waste your money, bring poor results and in some cases even damage your reputation and lose the existing organic results that you had acquired naturally.

WhiteHat SEO for business is normally worked out on a monthly fee, with the shortest contracts usually sitting around the 6 month mark. The minimum you should expect to pay is around $1,500 - $2,000 per month. This should be expected for lower competition keywords, with higher competition keywords coming in at around $3,000-$10,000 per month. For large multi-national brands or corporations who have many keywords in highly competitive markets, $50,000+ per month can be expected.
Again, these campaigns bring thousands of targeted visitors to your business who are ready to buy and engage with your service. A good marketing company should know your business and advise you if it's worth the spend after calculating a rough ROI. For example, if you can make $100,000 per month from traffic delivered to your website, a monthly spend of $40,000 is justified.

Your market, keywords and aims all factor in to budget costs, so make sure to get a quote if some of these numbers make your head spin, the real thing to bare in mind here is that the absolute minimum you should expect to spend will lie around the$1,000 - $2,000 per month mark.

6. Why is WhiteHat SEO expensive?

You're probably wondering why WhiteHat SEO comes with such a high price tag.. I'm sure you've seen other 'ranking/SEO' services for a fraction of the price at merely a few hundred dollars, if that.. Well, WhiteHat SEO is expensive because it uses expensive 'ingredients'.

It's perfectly feasible to create an online marketing campaign for under a few hundred dollars:

Auto-generate some content: $10 at most, free if you already have the software
Blast this auto-content through your software and make some link: $30 (cost to run software based on 'proxies' and 'captcha solvers')

At under $40 cost, you could be charged $100, netting the marketer a $60 profit.. not bad..

However this is 'BlackHat'. It does have its purpose for those who want to benefit from cheap short term rankings, make some cash then repeat the process on another site. But again, if you want successful long-term online marketing for your real business,you'll want to steer clear..

So let's look at where your money goes with a WhiteHat campaign:

Content

A huge amount of the budget is spent on creating high quality engaging content. Remember a minute ago we discussed building 'connections' from high quality websites? Well placing your link in a body of high quality text, does wonders to establish that connection. High quality writers aren't cheap – you're looking at anywhere between $7-$25+ per article.. so to take an average of $10 per article, $100 will only get you 10 articles (or 10 bodies of text to put your connecting link into).. starting to see why it's so expensive?

Press Releases

WhiteHat SEO usually includes a press release of some sort or another, again the content for these press releases isn't cheap, and combined with the cost of syndicating this content across big players in the online media world comes in at several hundred dollars a piece, and that's only on certain networks.. Long term media partners are just one of the tools in a WhiteHat SEOcompany's arsenal. You're budget goes towards keeping those connections, and often submitting content to their networks and allowing your website a 'soapbox' to relay your brands message (and ultimately increase rankings).

HQ Partners

As mentioned in the press release section, quality partners and networks make up a good deal of WhiteHat SEO, finding placements for your business and ensuring maximum benefit from these connections takes time and effort. You are also paying for exclusivity, gaining access to authoritative websites that others are not able to make connections with.

Company Overheads

When dealing with a real marketing company there are substantial costs involved. The company has full time, qualified staff, researchers, web developers, programmers and many other overheads to consider. There is a huge difference between hiring a digital marketing firm who will go through your campaign in careful detail, offering advice and guidance through the years and hiring a one off freelancer, who'll go in do the 'job' and leave.

7. How long will it take to see results?

This is a complicated question to answer, since the results are based on so many factors, unique to your campaign and market. For a very general answer, between 4 to 8 months is considered fair for average campaigns using WhiteHat techniques.

The aim is to build the website's popularity up naturally over time and create the conditions necessary for it rise organically in the search engine results. I advise all my clients that if they are looking for results sooner than 3 months, they are better off refraining from any SEO campaign.. There are hundreds of companies that will promise you results in this time, but you can guess the type of tactics they will employ to achieve this.. In most cases, it's not 'natural' to rank this quickly and the procedure necessary to see results like this will almost always harm your site in the long run.. You may experience great results for a few months, but once the string starts to unravel, it can take just days before you're standing there naked, with only one sleeve of your sweatshirt left and a whole lot of wool in a heap beside you..

To be blunt; slow, steady results last. Quick results fade. (In most cases).

8. What happens after the results are obtained?

Any good marketing company should have a well thought out action plan to be rolled out after results are achieved. Often referred to as 'maintenance campaigns', these aim to keep the current rankings where they are by sending continued positive signals toward the site and maintaining withstanding connections. Again, with BlackHat SEO this is rarely factored into the equation, since it is rare for a website to last this long when such techniques are employed and often 'maintaining' results is the last thing on the marketer's mind – simply achieving them is viewed as the goal.

You can estimate spending a fraction of the initial monthly cost of your campaign when in 'maintenance mode' since far less work needs to be done. The main reason for this further campaign is to show Google that you are still relevant and deserve the position you've been given. It's a bad sign for a site to receive a lot of activity surrounding it, shoot to the top of the results and then go completely quiet. Google sees this as very unnatural. This is of course another benefit of WhiteHat campaigns, they are carried out in such as way as to stimulate real interaction in the first place, so a maintenance campaign furthers this work.

9. Which company should I go with? (Checklist)

There are tons of great companies out there who can work wonders for your website and business delivering excellent results and even doubling or tripling your income! But.. there are also thousands that will do the opposite, eating up your budget then spitting out your website.. Here's how to make sure you're in the first camp, with my handy checklist!



Do they immediately quote you a price, or do they need time to review your needs?
Have they researched your niche/market?
Have they built a campaign around your needs and aims?
Do they talk about on-site SEO and changes that must be made to your site?
Do they offer these 'on-site' changes as part of the campaign?
Are their promises 'too good'?
Is their time frame too quick?
Do they have a plan for after you rank? Do they even mention this?
How secretive are they about their campaigns and the actual work they do?
Do they use 'buzz' words and 'waffle'?
Are they a 'legit' business? Are they registered? Do they have an office? Are they easy to contact? Do they have a receptionist? Are they easy to contact?
Are they pleasant to speak with?
Do they require you to sign a contract?
Do they say 'no' if your demands are unrealistic?
Do they quote realistic prices?



Below are the questions that you should ask yourself and/or the potential marketing company – if they haven't covered something below, or you feel there answer is a bit strange, it may be time to search for another organisation.. If on the other hand they pass with flying colours, you may have just found your digital marketing firm!

Do they immediately quote you a price, or do they need time to review your needs?

Be alarmed if a company is able to instantly quote you a price! Unless on the rare occasion they have just finished an extremely similar campaign, they shouldn't be able to quote you an exact price straight away! This is because it takes time to research the market and niche before the cost can be calculated. A rough ball-park figure is okay, but an exact price is a warning sign!

Have they researched your niche/market?

Continuing from the point above, they should have thoroughly researched your niche before going ahead with any proposals from their side. If they don't take the time to look into your specific market and needs then they can't truly know how much it should cost, or what they'll need to do – you are dealing with a company whose ethos is based around a 'one size fits all' mentality!Avoid!

Have they built a campaign around your needs and aims?

They might have researched your niche, and they may know what they will need to do to rank a website highly in your market.But do they understand you? Do they understand why you want to be ranked? Good digital marketing companies will go the extra mile to find out what it is you're selling or what service you provide, this will enable them to not only bring you traffic, butensure relevant, targeted traffic that is more likely to convert.

Fantastic digital marketing companies will go the extra mile and make some rough calculations to see if such a campaign will be profitable.. There are many scenarios where the ROI will be negative based on the cost of the campaign vs the possible profit from products/services sold.. Does the marketing company mention anything about possible ROI? Have they gone this extra mile to learn your business and understand what you're trying to achieve?

Do they talk about on-site SEO and changes that must be made to your site?

If they ignore your site, and purely focus on 'off-page' elements, something is wrong. Unless, in the extremely rare case, your website is already perfect, they should go through necessary changes that should be made. These are SEO basics.

Do they offer these 'on-site' changes as part of the campaign?

It's all very well talking to you about these changes, but will they implement them for you? If a company doesn't really care about the state of your website, then it can't really be concerned with the success of the campaign since these two elements go hand in hand.

Are their promises 'too good'?

Be suspicious of any company that promises you 'the moon'. The adage, 'if it seems too good to be true', comes to mind, and should be considered when reviewing proposals.

Is their time frame too quick?

Again, if the time frame is too quick, alarm bells should sound. They are either performing some techniques that you don't want associated with your business, or they are flat out lying to you.

Do they have a plan for after you rank? Do they even mention this?

It's important to understand how they view you as a client. Do they want a long-term business relationship, keeping you on top of the SERPs for years to come, or are they after a 'wam, bam, thank you mam' type deal. Have they informed you of what happens after the results are achieved? If they have not, then perhaps they don't want any long term commitments, or they haven't thought about this element; two reasons to say 'goodbye'.

How secretive are they about their campaigns and the actual work they do?

Online marketing companies aren't going to lay down their exact plan for you, this rarely happens, after all you could be a competitor looking to benefit from their hard work and tried & tested models. However, they should be open with you about what they do and happy to have a chat about what work is carried out and how they achieve results to some degree. Beware of companies who just want to take your money, while snapping at you if you ask too many questions. Firstly, it's just bad etiquette, and secondly there may be something more sinister behind their silence.. such as lack of real understanding themselves!

Do they use 'buzz' words and 'waffle'?

Watch out for companies who try and palm off your questions with 'buzz' words and meaningless descriptions. They may 'talk the talk', but you run the same risks as mentioned in the previous point.

Are they a 'legit' business? Are they registered? Do they have an office? Are they easy to contact? Do they have a receptionist? Are they easy to contact?

If you're running a legitimate company, you want to do business with a legitimate company. Do a little background researchand find out who you're dealing with. You might be dazzled by the first few conversations you have with them, but then find it increasingly hard to contact them after you've paid. Do they have a phone number? You'd be surprised what a receptionist can tell you about a company. Are they professional and happy to answer your call? Or does it sound like you just caught them with their trousers down halfway through microwaving a mini calzone? Someone who only wants to communicate via instant message or email is also a huge no no!

Are they pleasant to speak with?

If you're going to be using this company for a long time, you'll probably spend a decent amount of time on the phone with them. It makes for a better business relationship if they're pleasant to speak with, you don't want to feel like you're annoying them every time you call or have a question. They don't have to be a barrel of laughs, but someone you enjoy discussing your business with is a definite plus!

Do they require you to sign a contract?

If there's no contract, then it's very strange. There are some exceptions to this rule, but as a whole you'd expect a legit company to operate with a legally binding contract. This is for your security and theirs.. Tread carefully if there's no contract as you could find yourself with no legal recourse.

Do they say 'no' if your demands are unrealistic?

A good company will not take your money if your demands are unrealistic. If you ask for a golden spaceship, lunch with the queen and an unlimited supply of cherry flavoured limited edition Star Wars candies, you should be turned down. Be very wary of a company that nods and smiles at your every request. They're most likely trying to get your money as fast as possible without a single intention of doing what you ask.. If you think what you're getting is too good be true.. you know the rest.

Do they quote realistic prices?

Again, based on the rough pricing figures I mentioned earlier on, do their prices seem realistic? There are very few circumstances where you'll get legitimate WhiteHat SEO for under $1,000 a month.. You've seen what this stuff costs, so if you're able to get a campaign for $500, question how they're able to do that while still making a profit.. Simple answer; they're cutting corners at some point.

At the end of the day you should work with a marketing company that you feel comfortable with and are happy to trust with the reputation of your business. After all, the work they do will result in how your brand is perceived online by millions of people. If you think the marketing company you are dealing with is a good reflection of the quality and standing of your business and that they truly understand your aims, market and business model then they are the right fit for your organization! Along the same lines, make sure you understand how they work too. There is an old saying, 'never invest in things you do not understand' and it definitely applies here when contemplating this important business decision.

And my final piece of advice: Buying no SEO at all is better than buying bad SEO.
